Exercise Referral Programme

Instructor having a consultation with a client

Through this programme, participants typically take part in gym or class activity under the instruction of qualified Exercise Referral Instructors. You may also be signposted to other community activity, or be prescribed home-based exercise where this is deemed more suitable for your needs.

A self-referral does not guarantee acceptance onto the programme, however we will do our best to find you the most suitable way to help you become more active.

The Exercise Referral Programme prescribes a 12 week course of physical activity to inactive adults living with long term health conditions.

Exercise Referral is an intervention programme aiming to give adults with chronic health conditions the confidence, knowledge and motivation needed to exercise independently for life. Qualified Exercise Referral Instructors (ERIs) deliver a range of activities based either in leisure centres and community venues.

I feel more independent in what I can achieve in the gym and I liked the exercises I was given.

Programme participants typically take part in gym or class activity at either Enderby Leisure Centre, Parklands Leisure centre and Wigston Pool and Fitness centre.

If eligible, you will have a consultation with one of our instructors to better understand you, your motivations and your health conditions and from there the instructor will devise a plan for you to work to over the 12 weeks based on your goals and abilities. They will be checking in on you regularly during the sessions you attend and you will have a review halfway through and after 12 weeks, where you and the instructor will discuss your progress and the next steps on your activity journey.
